Mexico to take actions after Canada decision on steel

Mexico, Oct. 11 (Notimex).- Mexico deeply regrets the decision announced this Thursday by the Canadian government to establish measures to safeguard certain families of steel products, which will affect Mexican exports of products such as oil drilling pipe and wire rod, so it will take actions to protect the national industry, said the Ministry of Economy (SE, for its acronym in Spanish).

"Mexico will carefully review the measures imposed, as they could be in violation of Canada's international commitments such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), as well as jeopardizing the competitiveness and commercial integration of the regional industry," it added.

In a statement, the agency said that Mexico also regrets that these measures are taken when both countries have made progress in trade negotiations that will promote greater regional integration.

It said that the Mexican government will take the necessary actions to protect Mexican exporters in the short term, as well as using all the mechanisms available in the NAFTA and the World Trade Organization (WTO) to achieve its total exclusion from the measures of safeguard
