Mexico, Nov. 7 (Notimex).- The head of the Ministry of Energy (Sener, for its acronym in Spanish), Pedro Joaquín Coldwell, estimated that by 2024, 35 percent of electricity generation will come from environmentally friendly sources.
In the framework of a forum, in which he received on behalf of the team of public servants of the energy sector the "Energy Year Mexico", a prize for the person of the decade in renewable energies, the federal official spoke about the work for the transition to clean energies in Mexico.
Through his Twitter account, he explained that according to the International Renewable Energy Agency, green energies and the adoption of energy efficiency measures can achieve 90 percent of the carbon reductions related to energy production.
Hence, by the second half of this century we can move from a sector based on fossil fuels to one with a zero carbon footprint.
He explained that in order to achieve this the energy reform included mechanisms to transform the electricity system into a cleaner and more reliable one, and since 2016 there is a wholesale electricity market where all clean technologies participate, where large consumers buy electricity, either generators private companies or to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE, for its acronym in Spanish).
In addition to creating efficient markets, the new model implemented by the energy opening seeks to give Mexico the necessary tools to build a more sustainable future, he insisted.
He stressed that the new paradigm is aligned with the new international practices, gathers experiences and success stories in several countries that have opened their electricity sector and are active agents in the fight against global warming.
He explained that the mechanism of long-term electric auctions is successful to encourage the construction of renewable generation infrastructure, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transform the energy matrix towards cleaner sources and access to more competitive electricity rates.
With three auctions concluded, the solar and wind capacity that was had at the beginning of this presidential term will quadruple. The current auction model guarantees that companies will have a buyer of green energy, so it is certain to develop power plants, he said.
He said that as a result of the three auctions, investments have been committed for eight thousand 600 million dollars to build 65 new power plants, 46 solar and 19 wind power plants; Of the total of these new plants, five are in operation, 10 are in the testing phase, 24 are in construction processes and the rest are in the process of permits granting.
