Pregnancy improves memory and decision-making, stresses specialist

Mexico, May 10 (Notimex) .- After the first pregnancy, women reach a difficult neuronal maturity to observe in another stage of life that allows optimizing decision making, improves memory and develops selective attention.

Eduardo Calixto González, an academic at the Faculty of Psychology of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM, for its acronym in Spanish), explained that in pregnancy the brain reorganizes neural networks, which improves cognitive processes.

When pregnant and having a baby, he explained in a statement, there is a cerebral maturity and mothers have the ability to forget selfish thoughts and increase the instinct of protection in the care of their child.

This process is due to various hormones: the oxytocin secreted by the brain generates attachment with the baby, while progesterone and estrogen also help to strengthen the affective bond.

"Thus, the brain of future mothers is willing to have more activities related to the care of children; this way they guarantee the care of the human being and diminish the risks of life of the baby ", he explained.

Likewise, the head of the Department of Neurobiology of the National Institute of Psychiatry detailed the changes in the immune system that cause vomiting at that stage.

The organism detects cells that do not belong to it and physiological immunosuppression occurs (reduction of the immune response), which changes the perception of what is eaten and smelled.

During this stage, more complex processes occur that also cause changes in the father of the family. In this way, when a pregnant woman coexists with her husband, she transmits the hormones of pregnancy through sweat or saliva and causes an impact on the male's brain.
