Caracas, May 24 (Notimex) .- A riot in the Venezuelan prison of Acariagua, in the north center of the country, left today a death toll of 23 prisoners and 14 police officers injured by the shootings and some grenades that were used by both sides during the incident, local media reported.
The violent events occurred this Friday morning at the José Antonio Páez Police Coordination Center, in the Campo Lido sector of Acariagua, Portuguesa state.
After the outbreak of the riot, troops of the Bolivarian National Police, of the National Anti-Extortion and Kidnapping Command and of the State Police grouped their forces to try to control the violence which generated in the confrontation and the described death toll and wounded.
During the clashes, at least three grenades exploded, although it is not clear at the moment if the prisoners or the policemen were who activated the explosive devices, according to the information available.
The problems in the detention center of Acariagua worsened in the last 10 days, but the death of a prisoner this morning made explode the violence that degenerated in the riot. Police officers keep the prison facilities surrounded.
